The Mosque of Cordoba, once the second-largest mosque in the world after Mecca, is now the most significant Islamic monument in the West. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984, it was initially built by the Umayyad emir Abd al-Rahman I in 785. The mosque as we know it today is the result of successive enlargements and, finally, a Christian intervention that transformed part of it into a cathedral. We can assure you: visiting the Mosque of Cordoba, "la Mezquita," will provoke an indescribable emotion in you.
