It was the Romans who built this absolutely strategic bridge over the Guadalquivir River (1st century BC), the only one that Córdoba had until the middle of the 20th century. Of that original bridge only the location and the foundations remain ... and perhaps even that would not be if not for the crucial reconstructions carried out during the Islamic period. At one end of the bridge, the Bridge Gate (originally, Bab Al Qantara) on the other, the Calahorra Tower.
