The Albaycín is the oldest neighborhood in Granada and the origin of the city. The first inhabitants of this area were Iberians and Romans. The Arabs settled here in the 8th c. and built the first fortress, Alcazaba Qadima, and the defensive wall. From the 11th c., the Zirid kings rebuilt and expanded this wall, until the medina was perimeter and isolated completely. Later Nasrid kings extended the walls to new areas (14th c.).
